Introducing "Groomed"

Photographs by Paul Nathan, featuring an essay by Jorge Bendersky

“Some of our greatest historical and artistic treasures we place with curators in museums; others we take for walks" Roger  A. Caras

Impeccably groomed dogs are a living, breathing art form. In the space of a few hours, the skilled groomer will gain a dog’s trust and literally transform the animal into a work of art.

In GROOMED photographer Paul Nathan has captured this moment of pre-show glory in graphic studio portraits featuring Poodles, Cockerspaniels, Bichon Frisés, Bedlington Terriers, Komondors and more. Nathan photographed most of his subjects at a high profile grooming competition paying special attention to the aesthetic accomplishments of some of the world’s top dog groomers. But along with beauty—the perfectly shaped puffs and bracelets on a Poodle’s forelegs and hind legs, the gleaming coats of Cockerspaniels—Nathan reveals each dog’s character. The results are portraits that are at once humorous, intimate, insightful, unexpected and anthropomorphic.
